The Fool Award The Fool Award find its origins some late afternoon in a stuffy high school classroom. It was here during an after school gaming session, with some younger players that I became completely fed up with players not paying attention to details, and having total disregard for common sense. Thus the Fool Award was born. The Fool Award was originally given in total jest to any player making a stupid decision during gameplay. When it was issued, it always preceeded a lot of laughter and mocking of the recipient... good times. The interesting thing about the Fool Award, is that it soon took on a life of its own. Players began to fear the fool award. What turned out as a joke on my part, soon became a tool of awsome game mastering power. Once the Fool Award had been introduced, just a curious glance from me at any player pondering some important decision, and he'd start sweating. Nervous not at the outcome of his game decision, but wether or not he would be awarded the Fool Award for it. And if a player was really acting with total disregard for intelligence, a mere showing of the fool award would send players scrambling for cooperation and serious role playing. In all seriousness, the Fool Award is a fun tool... and once the Fool Award comes out a few times, players do tend to keep it in the back of their mind and at times try to think things out more carefully in hopes of avoiding it. In recent years the Fool Award has progressed even further, evolving to an advanced, more efficient Foolish state. I have currently assigned a XP penalty to anyone who holds the Fool Award at the end of an adventure. Although the exact amount varies, it's usually just enough so that a pc really has incentive not to get it. Once a player does get the Fool Award, he's stuck with it. The only way to get rid of a Fool Award, is by having another player do something even more foolish, so that he gets awarded it. At this time, possession of the award is passed.
